About

Vancouver-based oriental dance performer, instructor and event organizer

Hello! Thank you for being here!

I’ve been studying Oriental dance for over 30 years, with a strong focus on learning directly from dancers in Egypt. Since 2010, I’ve made regular trips there for deeper cultural immersion—training, observing, and continuing to build my understanding of the dance in its social and cultural context. Alongside that, I have started to study Arabic to better connect with the music, lyrics, and environment that shape the art form.

I’ve been teaching weekly classes since 2002, as well as workshops across Canada and internationally. I’ve been invited as a guest artist at festivals and events in Egypt, Brazil, Vietnam, Ukraine, Ecuador, the USA, and the UK, and I’ve performed throughout the Vancouver area since 2000.

In addition to teaching and performing, I’ve hosted international instructors, judged competitions, and worked to create opportunities for students and audiences to experience high-quality Oriental dance. My approach is grounded in respect for the source, ongoing study, and sharing what I learn in a clear, practical way that is fun and accessible for all.

About my Pilates life…

Alongside my work in Oriental dance, I’m also a qualified Pilates instructor, teaching both in-studio and online through my platform, pilatesbyashley.com. Pilates has become a key part of how I support not just my own body, but also for my students.

For me, Pilates and Oriental dance naturally complement each other. The strength, control, and alignment developed through Pilates directly support the technique, fluidity, and precision needed in the dance. It also helps with injury prevention, recovery, and building a body that can sustain long-term training and performance which is important for us all.

Whether someone is dancing seriously or simply wants to move well and feel strong and connected to their movements, I see Pilates as a practical foundation for longevity and function—in dance and in the body overall. It’s a way to keep showing up, training consistently, and maintaining quality of movement over time.
