ALL ABOUT SHAABI

ALL ABOUT SHAABI – March 2021

I am pleased to offer a 4 week shaabi master workshop series pulling apart and working with shaabi history, technique, & music. Shaabi is a form of popular working-class music which evolved from baladi in the second half of the 20th century. Shaabi is known to be the music of the people and has been popularized by artists such as Adaweya, Saad, Hakim & more recently Mohamed Ramadan. Shaabi music often makes political statements, discusses the realities of life & hardship, airs grievances and laments love but also can be cheerful & fun. It is a wide genre!

A big component of this course is theory and is guided by powerpoint presentation & discussion. This class is multi-level with something for everyone. As a big component of this series is theory based, dancers who are beginners are able to attend & get information.

Classes will be offered on Zoom.

This 4 week session starts Tuesday March 9 to March 30th 730-830pm PST for $60CDN. Drop-in cost $20.

Payment via etransfer or Paypal (send as friends and family only).

The link will be sent out after payment and will be used for the duration of the course. A recording will be sent out to those who miss class or want to take it. This class is limited to 12 participants so please register early to avoid disapoointment!

Baladi Basics

FINALLY Its happening! Ashley Rhianne Baladi Basics!

Baladi can be difficult to work with because of the different rhythms and melodies, the dance technique, body positions and the attitude. Baladi is commonly done in social settings and is usually improvised with the movements based off the instruments. Raqs Baladi (baladi dance) is a style all of its own, and is considered a precursor to the commonly known raqs sharqi of today.

What does Baladi mean?

Baladi means “my country” and can be referred to many things – baladi bread (ayesh baladi) , baladi girl (bint il balad), baladi music.
